 Preventing homelessness
Southdown is launching The new West Sussex Signpost service to help people in Sussex avoid the misery of losing their homes.
Our services cover the Horsham/Mid Sussex and Worthing/Adur areas and run in partnership with the district and borough councils and Supporting People Team.
People face homelessness for many reasons including debt, relationship breakdown and redundancy. We can provide free, practical advice for people at risk of losing owned or rented accommodation, and we offer help to people who are already homeless and sleeping on friends’ sofas.
Our staff will specifically provide support to people, placed in temporary accommodation by their local authority, and give them the opportunity to receive help to maintain their tenancies and support them to move on successfully into permanent accommodation. We will also reach out into the community and, for example, go into schools, colleges and day centres to spell out the realities of homelessness to young people and give advice on how to avoid it.
These new services will enable Southdown to make a real difference by preventing people from losing their homes and reducing the numbers of people in temporary and bed and breakfast accommodation. We are making the services as accessible as possible and will provide a variety of ways for people to get the support they need.
Horsham/Mid Sussex
Our Horsham services were launched on July 1st and are currently accepting self-referrals in addition to referrals from other agencies.
We have taken on seven new staff to help provide a total of 270 hours of support each week for local people at risk of homelessness. The area we cover includes Steyning, East Grinstead, Cowfold, Burgess Hill, Horsham and Haywards Heath.

Worthing/Adur
Our Worthing and Adur services have been launched from 5th November and we accept self-referrals in addition to referrals from other agencies. We have a large team to deliver the service that aims to prevent homelessness and repeat homelessness.
