Day Activities

Everyone needs enjoyable and exciting day time activities. Our staff can support you to use the swimming pool, shops and colleges in your local community. We can help you to join a club where you can meet other people, or to keep up with family and friends.

Types of activities we support

  • All service users living in staffed services now choose their day activities instead of going to day centres. We can also support people living at home with their families, helping to set up a daily activity programme.
  • People with the most complex needs are able to go swimming every week and really enjoy the fun and health benefits of being in the pool when they have skilled and experienced staff to support them.

  • Other people who are wheelchair users go to ‘Sailability’ – enjoying the pleasures of being out on the water with skilled support.
  • Many other activities including music, art, and sports are accessible in the community when people have the right support. We help people with learning disabilities to develop their potential  by trying out new experiences and taking some (well managed!) risks.

Personal Story

My name is Peter. I live at a Southdown Supported Living house in West Sussex. I attend a Day Service Centre three days each week. When I first went to the day centre I was a bit nervous but I tried lots of activities and was supported to choose the activities I enjoyed best. I first chose music as I really enjoyed playing the instruments, singing into the microphone and joining in with everyone. I still go to music on Tuesday mornings and it is still my favourite. I make my packed lunch the night before and get my bag ready to take with me. In the morning I get up and my support staff help me get ready and at 9.15am the taxi comes and takes me to the day centre, I usually share the taxi with another tenant who also goes there. This is really good as my support staff used to take me and bring me back home but now I can go on my own in the taxi.

On Wednesday afternoons a group of us go to a large park and do jobs around the park with the Park Rangers or with staff from the day centre, last time we helped groom the Shetland ponies and fed the pigs and the otters.  If the weather is really horrible we sometimes do indoor activities instead. I have enjoyed going to the day centre and have got much more confident and relaxed about doing things in groups and on my own, especially if things change suddenly. I have chosen extra activities and over the week I now do music on Tuesday morning, go to church on Wednesday morning and the Park in the afternoon. On Friday morning I do woodland art where we collect natural things on walks then make things with them and in the afternoon I do gentle dance that helps keep me fit, it is a lot of fun and I really enjoy it. I have also helped paint scenery for the Christmas show and taken part in sports days and social activities like going to the theatre and parties with the friends I have made.
